Production Methods
Most of today's furniture is produced by machines in factories, and in many
cases is hardly touched by a human hand. This sort of furniture is relatively
inexpensive, but it possesses little or nothing in the way of personal
expression and isn't designed to last.
Jonathan Francis makes furniture by hand, using time-honoured woodworking
methods. Each piece is unique. All solid wood furniture is made with traditional
joinery techniques throughout. Mortise and tenon, dovetail, and housing
joints are most commonly used, because although labour intensive, they are
mechanically strong. Some commissions require the use of veneers, which can
be used to great effect; and they can also be mixed with solid wood.
All furniture can be made to individual requirements or design, making pieces
unique. All pieces are made one at a time.
